Treasured Curriculum

Curriculm

At Treasured Tamariki, our curriculum is all about nurturing the whole child — socially, emotionally, physically, intellectually, and spiritually. We follow Te Whāriki, Aotearoa New Zealand’s early childhood curriculum, and bring it to life through play, exploration, and loving relationships.

Our learning environment is calm, creative, and culturally rich, with daily routines that help tamariki feel safe and confident. We offer:

  • Play-based learning led by children’s interests

  • Music and movement woven into transitions and group times

  • Nature-based learning in our gardens and outdoor spaces

  • Cultural storytelling and celebration that reflect our diverse community

  • Project work that builds curiosity, resilience, and a love of learning

We honour every child’s unique journey, celebrating who they are and where they come from.

Teaching Theories

Our teaching is inspired by some of the best early learning philosophies from around the world — blended beautifully with our local values and heart-led approach.

We draw from:

Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences

Every child is intelligent in different ways — through words, music, movement, nature, emotions, and more. We create opportunities for each child to shine in their own unique style.

Pikler & RIE Approach

We practice respectful caregiving, giving children time and space to lead their own learning, make choices, and develop confidence through trust and connection.

Schema Theory

Children often repeat patterns of movement or ideas as a way of learning. We observe and support these natural urges, building meaningful learning around them.

Project-Based Learning

Children explore real-world topics through hands-on discovery, collaboration, and creative expression. These projects often grow out of tamariki’s own interests and questions — making learning authentic and exciting.

All of these theories sit gently beneath our practice, guiding how we plan, teach, and relate to tamariki and their whānau.

Learning Themes

Every month, we explore a new learning theme that helps tamariki connect with the world around them. These themes reflect our values — connection, collaboration, and care — and inspire creative play, storytelling, music, art, and group experiences.

Some of our favourite themes include:

  • Love & Connection – Learning kindness, friendship, and empathy

  • Nature & Nurture – Caring for the earth and each other

  •  Light in the Darkness – Exploring hope and inner strength

  •  Wisdom & Learning – Curiosity, creativity, and growing ideas

  • Generosity & Service – Helping others and being part of a community

  • Celebrating Cultures & Families – Honouring where we come from

Through these rich themes, tamariki develop their sense of belonging, purpose, and identity — all while having heaps of fun.
